For the past 7 years, I've been interviewing PwC Partners on their networking techniques.

Here are the top lessons I’ve learnt about networking at Xmas events:

Don’t talk about business.
Christmas events aren’t for pitching or updating. They’re for connecting as humans first.

Use the warmth of the festive season to build real rapport.
People naturally open up at this time of year - it’s the perfect moment to get to know them beyond the title.

Ask about their Christmas plans.
“What are you looking forward to over the break?”
“What’s a Christmas tradition you love?”
Simple, human questions lead to big conversations.

Let family be part of the conversation.
When someone talks about their kids, their partner, their parents, their traditions they’re showing you who they truly are. Listen. Be present.

Show them you genuinely care.
Look people in the eye. Smile. Ask follow-up questions. Remember the details. Those little moments are what build trust.

Be light, fun, welcoming, smiling - be the warmest person in the room.
This is the season for joy. People gravitate to those who bring good, uplifting energy.

Focus on the moment, not the outcome.
The best networking is curiosity-led, not agenda-led. Enjoy the person, not the potential business.

Follow up with kindness.
A simple “Loved chatting with you last night - enjoy the break!” message can deepen a connection more than any sales email ever will.
